You need to be able to make the right decisions when working alone. Taking food related training courses, such as Food Safety, HACCP and Allergy Awareness, will help you to do that. As you train, you'll find out that a lot of your learning is practical common sense, backed up with scientific explanations.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4.\u00a0You need to understand your personal, legal responsibilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is the scary one. As a food handler, you have a legal responsibility to do everything you reasonably can to serve food that is safe to eat. A good food hygiene course will explain your legal responsibilities and those of your employers and supervisors.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5.\u00a0Good food hygiene helps you prevent waste<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The food industry is becoming increasingly focussed on the environmental impact of food waste. Having a good understanding of food safety practices \u2013 especially fridge and freezer temperatures, food labelling and hot-holding, cooling and reheating methods \u2013 will enable you to do your bit in the war on waste. And for your employer, that means cost savings too \u2013 a big win-win!<\/p>\n<p>According to the Food Standards Agency - the government body that enforces food safety in businesses in the UK - all people working with food that is made for public consumption must be suitably trained and \/ or supervised. A Level 2 (or equivalent) Food Safety or Food Hygiene certificate shows that you take that responsibility seriously. A potential employer can see that you will fit into an organisation with a strong food safety culture.
