What does your food business need to do to meet April 2022 calorie labelling regulations?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The government has announced<\/a> that calories will be labelled on menus and food labels in certain \u2018out-of-home food businesses\u2019 from April 2022. Out-of-home refers to businesses that prepare food for immediate consumption by their customers, such as cafes, restaurants, pubs and takeaways. Here's our quick guide on labelling calories on your menus.<\/p>\n

What businesses does this affect?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The new legislation means that\u00a0large businesses with 250 or more employees\u00a0<\/strong>in England, including cafes, restaurants and takeaways, will need to display the calorie information of non-prepacked food and soft drinks that are prepared for customers. In some circumstances, franchisees are deemed to be a part of their franchisor\u2019s business and therefore employee numbers are calculated across the whole business.<\/p>\n

When does it come into force?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The legislation comes into force from 6th April 2022, for the businesses outlined above<\/p>\n

How must calorie information be displayed?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Calorie information will need to be displayed at the point of choice for the customer, such as physical menus, online menus, food delivery platforms and food labels<\/p>\n

Businesses are also required to display the statement \u2018adults need around 2000 kcal a day\u2019 on their menus where food is chosen from a menu, or otherwise on a label where it can be seen by customers when making their food choices. Children\u2019s menus are exempt from displaying the statement referencing daily calorie needs as the calorie requirements of a child vary with age and are less than those of an adult<\/p>\n

Why is calorie labelling legislation being brought in?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The measures form part of the government\u2019s wider strategy to tackle obesity. They will help to ensure people are able to make more informed, healthier choices when it comes to eating out or ordering takeaways.<\/p>\n

When must smaller businesses comply with the new calorie labelling legislation?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

At the present time, no plans to introduce this legislation into smaller food businesses have been announced.<\/p>\n

What are the penalties for non-compliance?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

This has yet to be announced.<\/p>\n
