Many online courses offered don't have the backbone the nice looking website try make them look like they have. We have added this section to allow you to see what we have behind our awards and how hard we work to give you the highest standard we can possibly achieve.
Which level of training is relevant for me?
It really depends on what role you have in the food industry. We have created a quick guide and if you need any more clarification, please just call or send an email and one of the team will help you.
Level 1 - Food Hygiene Certificate
Our course is designed for “front of house” staff, waiters, concession stands, NHS clinical staff, and retail shop workers who handle pre-packed foods.
You will probably be serving food already cooked in a kitchen, you may occasionally have to re-heat food and you will almost certainly be involved in food safety, cleaning, rubbish disposal etc. You will NOT be involved in the preparation or cooking of food from raw.
Our course is very much a “mini Level 2” and provides you all the information you need to serve safe food.
Study Time is approx. 1 hour
Level 2 - Food Hygiene Certificate
This is very much seen as the industry standard and is for anyone who handles, prepares, cooks and serves food. It is designed for people who actually cook or handle food from chilled, frozen or fresh/raw. It covers all aspects of food safety including bacteria, physical & chemical contamination, personal hygiene, cleaning, pest & waste control, the law.
If in doubt, Level 2 is the course we would strongly recommend as the minimum requirement for anybody working in the food industry.
Study Time is approx. 2-4 hours
Level 3 - Food Hygiene Certificate
Also known as Food Hygiene Intermediate Course or Food Hygiene Supervisor training.
You may be a Head Chef, Supervisor, Manager or Business Owner and you are looking to develop your food safety and management knowledge?
Alternatively, you may already hold a Level 2 certificate and are looking to progress both your knowledge and career.
The course covers food safety and bacteria in more detail and provides information on how you manage both the business and your team in vital areas such as the law, controlling bacteria and food threats, physical & chemical contamination, cleaning, pest & waste control, personal hygiene and food safety. It explains the importance of a Food Safety Management System inc. HACCP and how you would implement and manage this within the business. Our course also includes two new and unique chapters which cover: Training Your Team, and also Ethics and the Environment.
This course is strongly recommended for anyone in a management position.
Study Time is approx. 20-25 hours
Do I need training to work with food?
Yes you do so that you comply with current legislation.
The law states that you must undertake training that is relevant to your role:
- Food handlers must receive appropriate supervision, and be instructed and/or trained in food hygiene, to enable them to handle food safely.
- There is no legal requirement to attend a formal training course or get a qualification, although many businesses may want their staff to do so.
- The necessary skills may also be obtained in other ways, such as through on-the-job training, self-study or relevant prior experience.
The operator of the food business is responsible for ensuring this happens.
Does the training have to be an accredited Level 2 course?
Your training does not have to be accredited. We think it's important to give you honest answers.
An Environmental Health Officer (EHO) is more interested in the following:
- you have received relevant training
- the training complies with current laws
- you understand the reasons behind food safety
- you apply food safety practices and methods in your workplace.
An EHO’s role is primarily to ensure that you are preparing, cooking or serving food to the general public in a safe manner and it will not harm anyone. Your training may be in-house, a CPD (Continuing Professional Development) course or fully Accredited. The important point is that you receive training, understand it and put it into practice.
Will an EHO accept my Level 2 food hygiene certificate?
Our training course meets the required standards recognised by an EHO, but you will have to demonstrate proof of learning and that you are implementing this knowledge into your everyday role.
Environmental Health Officers MUST remain impartial. They cannot favour one training company or product over another. This is worth knowing if an EHO queries your choice of provider.
Our course meets nationally recognised standards that an EHO must recognise because of the steps we have taken to satisfy Qualifi, our accrediting body.
The role of an EHO is to ensure that you are preparing, cooking or serving food to the general public in a safe manner and it will not cause injury to a person.
Which certificate do I need?
This depends on which sector you work in: catering, retail, childcare or manufacturing.
Choose this course if you work in:
- Pubs or hotels
- Restaurants or cafes
- Contract catering
- Fast-food outlets
- Hospitals or care homes
- Mobile food outlets
- Schools, colleges and universities
Choose this course if you work in:
- convenience stores
- anywhere food is pre-packed and you do not physically touch the food
Choose this course if you work in:
- Large food or drink manufacturing environments that include metal detection and/or moving production lines
If you are working for a small manufacturer which does not use these processes, then EHO guidance is to choose the Catering version.
Our childcare version can be found under childcare in the course selection menu
We would always recommend anyone woring with children undertakes this version of the course rather than the catering version as both are fine but the childcare version covers specific needs of early years and young poeples specific food safety needs.
Do the courses have ‘use-by’ dates?
If you register and pay for a course yourself you will have 30 days access to complete the course training material and the test. It may be useful to know that most applicants complete the course within 1-2 days.
If you buy multiple courses, or a bundle for you and your staff, the 30 days starts when each member of staff registers a course code. This means that you can buy as many course codes as you like and use them as and when needed. When you have gained a pass in the exam, the course access ends, leaving you to download your pass certificate at anytime; just log back in. When it comes to your training requirements we want you to have as much flexibility as possible.
Is Level 2 a Basic Food Hygiene certificate?
It was re-named Food Safety for Catering/Retail/Manufacturing when certain food practices and regulations changed. If you have an old Basic Food Hygiene Certificate and are looking to update your training and certification, you'll find it is the same Level 2 course.
If you already have a Basic Food Hygiene Certificate then it may be a good time to renew your training. It is recommended that you should renew your training every three years.
Is the Level 2 food hygiene certificate instant?
We want you to get your pass certificate straight away and we also want to give you a great price on all our courses. For the Level 2 food hygiene course we do not print and post certificates as this would significantly increase the cost of the course to you which is not good news for anyone.
Why should I buy your Level 2 food hygiene course?

“GREAT COURSE AND VERY INFORMATIVE”
I was really happy with the course. It was very informative and really allowed me to expand my knowledge. There were diagrams and images that even would assist someone who is alien to the catering industry. It is very clear and highlights the legal framework around the subject area. It also shows appropriate and inappropriate practices. This clarifies previous misconceptions that laymen like myself had. I was overall extremely satisfied and would most certainly recommend the course for people from all walks of life.
“VERY EASY TO USE”
Last year I put 10 employees through the course and have just signed up another 6. Its a very easy to use course informative and comprehensive.
The employees can work at their own pace and there is a fast track option for more experiences members of staff who have done the course several times before.
Great value for money.
